Running a blog contest is a great way to attract new readers as well as increase the connection with your current readers. Here are 10 tips to help you run a successful blog contest

Are you ready yet?
This is an important question to ask, as you will need to make sure you have enough regular readers and subscribers in order for your blog contest to be successful. The last thing you want is to have a contest with no entries. I recommend waiting until your blog had daily traffic levels above 200.

What do you want?
You will want to evaluate your goals and figure out what you want to achieve. This should be done prior to setting up your contest. Many people run blog contests to create buzz to attract new readers as well as rss subscribers. Other goals could be increasing your Twitter followers or Technorati rating or comments.

Keep it simple
If your blog contest is too difficult and requires too many hoops to jump through, people will not enter. Be respectful of your reader’s time. A good rule of thumb is too keeping the number of action items to 4 or less.

Prizes
You have to make it enticing and worth entering by offering useful or valuable prizes. Cash is king and will always attract the most participants. If you cannot afford a big cash prize, consider recruiting some sponsors. Other good prizes could include links, or ads on your blog.

Consider the time
You will want to have the proper length of time for your blog contest. I saw one contest recently where the contest was over a year away. That is way too long. I think a month or two is reasonable as it will allow enough people to enter and will allow the word to spread.

I would strongly recommend that you encourage your readers to help you promote your contest through social media like Twitter, Facebook, Digg, StumbleUpon, etc.. Give them extra points for promoting via social media. This is the best way to get your contest to go viral.
